Paragraphing

Tips for writing more solid paragraphs:

Write a paragraph explaining why some people are fascinated by fear.
  1. Make sure your topic sentence is not too narrow: "People are fascinated by fear for many reasons" instead of "One reason people are fascinated by fear is that they enjoy the emotional rush. Another reason is that they like to conquer their fears."
  2. Make sure your topic sentence is not too broad: "People are naturally curious about fear, just as they are about other things" instead of "People are naturally curious."
  3. Make sure that all of your sentences support your topic sentence.
  4. Provide explanations for ideas that may not obviously connect to your paragraph's topic.
  5. Start a new paragraph only with purpose and planning - not because your brain "shifts" into another mode of thought. If you turn this assignment into two paragraphs, make sure that each one has a topic sentence and at least three supporting ideas.
